India getting to know itself

Indian Ocean is a contemporary fusion music band from India. Some music critics describe the Indian Ocean music as "Indo-rock fusion with jazz-spiced rhythms that integrates shlokas, environmentalism, mythology and revolution".

Indian Ocean
Indian Ocean

Their music defies labeling and there is no generic formula, it’s an amalgamation happening in your mind and heart – there is rock, western pop, Indi-pop, classical, ghazal and qawwali, and a hundred different types of Indian folk music. The fabulous four work together as a band, but have individualized styles, each quite different from the other.
The band had its genesis in 1990 when Susmit Sen met Asheem Chakravarty and their somewhat focused jamming sessions resulted in a few concerts. Susmit was on the guitar

Guitar and Asheem on tabla In 1990, with Shaleen Sharma on drums, they recorded their first demo. In 1991, Rahul Ram, a schoolmate of Susmit's joined the band on bass. After a lot of persuasion, and on the strength of the demo tape, HMV

HMV agreed to record Indian Ocean's first album in Kolkata. It took another year for it to be. In the first five years of the band's existence they played exactly four concerts. Shaleen, the drummer, left the band in March, 1994. In his place came Amit Kilam, just out of his teens and still doing college exams.

Vocals were then added, Susmit and Asheem left their jobs and had kids. Music became their only source of income - when not playing concerts, they odd-jobbed on music for television serials, advertisements and documentaries.

In 2006 the nine year old album was no. 2 on the iTunes UK world music charts!Came the second millennium, and so did Kandisa, Indian Ocean’s 3rd album, soon acquiring cult status and became a block-buster album of contemporary Indian music.....Click on for more.........

I noticed him first time on an MTV show where his hit single 'Stolen' featuring our Bollywood babe Bipasha Basu was being played. I found him really cute, a Desi munda singing, dancing and with all that different kind of a rhythm to his music, it was definitely just the kind I was looking for in the year 2005. A charming and hot looking guy with coolest girl in the toswn and some tantalizing music. Only later did I realize that Jay Sean is the man, who was the whole mastermind behind redefining urban music...Read More...
